In Maya, you will discover what archaeologists know about the ancient Maya and the unresolved questions they continue to investigate. Ancient Maya civilization was advanced, complex, known for monumental architecture and distinctive art styles, deep knowledge of astronomy and time-reckoning, and some of the most sophisticated writing systems in the ancient world. Although much is known about the Maya elite and their complex political systems lead by royal dynasties , information about their working classes is less accessible. Recent archaeological discoveries have begun to shed more light on everyday domestic life and the relationships of non-elites to the ruling class.

Did you know that Utah is home to the most rural school in the lower 48 states? Join us on a visit as NHMU’s Museum On the Move journeyed along miles of remote dirt roads to West Desert Elementary near the Nevada border.

Museum On the Move, an inquiry-based outreach program designed for 4th-grade students, is one of numerous educator resources made available by NHMU. In the 2017–2018 school year, Museum on the Move provided 21,354 of Utah’s students the opportunity to conduct science core-aligned investigations through the use of Museum-quality specimens.
