On Sunday 30th September we hosted a monster tug-of-war between man and lion. Our magnificent boy Kasanga went up against a group of great supporters who had won this exclusive auction prize at our events over the course of the year. The group also included the brilliant Billy Vunipola from Saracens!

In the end, our beautiful boy was the winner! Well done, Kasanga! 🦁

We have recently been gifted a remote controlled car via our Amazon Wish List and wanted to share the impact that gifts such as this have on our resident felines.

Although a remote-controlled car may seem an unusual thing to use for cheetah enrichment, it has the benefit of being completely unusual to these cats and therefore unlike anything they have seen before. As Willow is still young, and our adults are well desensitised to new items/experiences, the cheetahs we have at the BCS often approach new things with cautious intrigue. Not only does the car provide physical enrichment by encouraging a predator’s natural instinct to chase (although our guys weren’t quite bold enough for this just yet) but it also provides cognitive enrichment by encouraging their inquisitiveness.

Rest assured, we do take great care to only provide items suitable for each of the cats. We ensured that the car was sturdy and it will only be used with animals unable to do it much damage, thus ensuring the safety and welfare of our cats at all times.

Enrichment is incredibly important for all cats physical and psychological well-being. Our keepers have a variety of enrichment techniques to cater to our big cats’ needs. These can involve using food, toys and even the most basic of objects to encourage the cats to use their individual natural senses and abilities, or changes which give the opportunity for investigation and exploration. It can be as simple as making the cat’s regular feed more challenging, varied and fun, to changes within their enclosure which enhance the cat’s habitat. Here, our keeper Simon is helping Willow to hone in on her natural hunting skills through play!

Some of the products we use for our cat’s enrichment can be basic items which are found around the house, such as cardboard boxes (cats LOVE boxes 📦), or even your everyday kitchen spices! Here is a little update from our vacationing resident, Baikal! This super happy chap is melting the hearts of all that come across him (keepers and guests included), even chuffing at every person he meets! He has recently received a visit from Shirley, his keeper at Paradise Wildlife Park, and participated in a very successful training session. Needless to say, he seems to be very at home with us. With huge excitement, we’re pleased to announce the newest arrival of The Big Cat Sanctuary - a female jaguar named Keira!
This beautiful girl was born on 2nd April 2017 at our sister park, Paradise Wildlife Park in Hertfordshire. Keira has moved to The Big Cat Sanctuary by recommendation to be paired with our male jaguar, Neron, in the hope that they will breed as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

Since arriving in Kent in mid-August Keira has settled in well to life here at the Sanctuary. She is a wonderful girl; confident yet cautious, we saw her exploring her new enclosure (situated next door to Neron) within twenty-four hours of arrival. This is incredibly impressive for a new arrival after moving home.

We anticipate that Keira will start to feature on our day-to-day experiences in the near future, for now she is taking the time she needs to be fully comfortable in her new home.

This video shows our very proud Amur Tiger mum, Ronja, with her three 19-week old cubs. The girls had an exciting day watching their pool being filled up with water. Just like any kids who see hose pipes and a pool; you have to make sure everyone involved gets very, very wet! After a slow start at their investigations of this cold, wet water, which proved too much for their curiosity to ignore, they very soon were happily getting as wet as they could, splashing as much water over as big an area as they could reach...and then going to give mum, Ronja, a big hug!

The Big Cat Sanctuary is set in the heart of the countryside at Smarden in Kent. The peace and tranquillity of the site provides a sanctuary and excellent conditions for the successful breeding of the beautiful, yet endangered cats both large and small within the European Endangered Species Breeding.
