It may come as no surprise that like domestic cats, humans, or pretty much any species on the planet, wild cats can suffer with weight-related health issues. A cat being overweight or underweight can lead to health problems or be a sign of health problems already taking place. As with all aspects of their welfare, our keepers are keen to ensure that the weight of our cats is managed on a close level.

Our Keeper team have recently undertaken the regular task of weighing all our cats. As there can be such a huge variation in size between our animals, the team have had to come up with some ingenious ways to do this. Watch the video below to see how we went about weighing our White Lionesses!

Alongside the obvious health reasoning for weighing our cats, there is another extremely important purpose for why we do this, as Head Keeper Briony explains, “the reason I breathe a sigh of relief when I have weighed a cat is that if we were ever in the situation whereby a cat needed an emergency vet tomorrow, I would be able to confidently give that weight to the vet, knowing it reduces the risk of an anaesthetic to the cat as much as possible.”
