wildlife conservation society wcs Giles Clark visits the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya

We are incredibly excited to be able to share some delightful footage of Giles Clark, our Director of Big Cats and Conservation, from his latest visit to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. As one of our in-situ conservation partners, the Conservancy is leading the way in finding innovative, tangible, sustainable conservation techniques for both wildlife and people.

The Big Cat Sanctuary donated radio collars to be fitted to five of Ol Pejeta’s resident lions, as part of the BBC2 documentary series, Big Cats About The House. Giles assisted the team in identifying the best individuals to fit with collars and as well as in the process of finding, sedating, doing health checks, and fitting the collars. The data gathered by the collars go straight to the Ol Pejeta ecological monitoring department, which equips them to resolve to the challenges by protecting the local communities.

This process has proven to be effective in saving the lives of both humans and lions, protecting them from poaching as well as the human/wildlife threats which are playing such a huge part in the rapidly declining numbers of big cats in the wild.

The video below shows Giles finding and observing some of the lions that were collared as part of the initiative and giving an insight into the pride’s development.

Giles reports “I’ve been following another one of the collared lions here at Ol Pejeta, and she’s in this thicket right round behind me. Now what’s even more amazing is that she has two young cubs with her. I can barely see them, they are probably less than 48 hours old, and it is a testament to the incredible conservation work that’s being done here at Ol Pejeta.”
